Modern children’s literature as a distinctive literary genre is rooted in small narrative pamphlets and serializations of religious instruction that the early Victorians produced for the young poor. These inexpensive pocket reminders of daily right and wrong and paths to salvation were poignantly apropos at a time of high child mortality. But, with the advent of a new middle class and the cult of the family exemplified by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, well dressed moral tales of youthful etiquette and adult fantasy formed the genre’s two mainstreams and became the purview of serious writers, illustrators, and marketers. Scottish author Mrs. George Cupples (1839-1896) wrote over 50 children’s books, of which our Second edition of Carry’s Rose, or The Magic of Kindness was her fourth. She and her equally well-known maritime novelist and Scotch Deer Hound breeder, George Cupples, were themselves childless, but they shared the restive intellectual energy of their time and class which believed optimistically that the proper management of morality, science, industry could, ironically as it turned out, manifest a perfect world for the next generation. Condition: Good with bumping and other cover wear. Tape remnants to the frontispiece. Some toning. Expected wear. Dimensions: 4" x 6".
