Morgan Dennis (1892 – 1960) trained at the New England School of Design and studied etching in Provincetown, MA, and Cornwall, England. His fascination with dogs made him a successful illustrator early in his career. His immediately popular "Black and White Scotties" was commissioned by Dewar’s and used as advertising by the Black & White Scotch Whiskey Company for many years. Dennis' articles and illustrations on other dogs appeared in magazines such as Cosmopolitan, This Week, American, Good Housekeeping, and The Saturday Evening Post. Along with his commercial work, he began specializing in etchings of dogs and in 1924 published The Morgan Dennis Dog Book. Dennis was also much in-demand as a book illustrator. Ruth Adams Knight’s 1937 story about a seeing-eye dog: Friend in the Dark and Thomas Pendleton Robinson’s Pete are among his notable collaborations. After serving as a Marine in WWII, Dennis wrote and illustrated three more books of his own and illustrated many more by other authors. Today his etchings of dogs, such as Jack and Jill, are recognized and collected worldwide. Condition: Excellent. Re-backed with original gallery label. Dimensions: Image, 4-3/8" x 6-1/8". Frame, 12" x 17".
