The melon form has been popular in the art of India, Tibet and China for centuries. And while it is difficult to assign a precise date or place of origin to our six large unstrung turquoise beads, the attention to detail in the artistry, makes it highly likely that our examples were carved in one of those cultures. Because of its many seeds and sweet flesh, the melon has symbolized fecundity in the earthly realm and the promise of paradise in the afterlife. The beads may be knotted on a silk cord and worn or simply enjoyed for their color, weight, and soothing character. Condition: Excellent. Dimensions: Diam. each .75".
