Our four-piece set of small sterling silver serving pieces in its original fitted box is by the Gorham Manufacturing Company. The set is made up of two pierced spoons, a small fork  and a pierced “pusher.”  Pushers were generally associated with a child’s silverware, but the three other pieces would be unusual in that context. The entire set is monogrammed on the bases of the twist pattern handles. One of the premier American makers of fine sterling silver of all types, Gorham was founded in Providence, RI, by Jabez Gorham in 1831.  Jabez’s son, John Gorham, succeeded to head of the company in 1845. He was able to take advantage of a tariff by Congress in 1842 which effectively blocked the importation of silverware from outside the United States.,  The younger Gorham  introduced mechanized production methods, enlarged the premises in downtown Providence, improved the designs, and expanded the Gorham product line. Gorham operated two retail stores in New York City, 889-891 Broadway and 396 Fifth Avenue, but in 1929 they merged their retail operations with the equally prestigious jewelers Black Starr & Frost. Judging by the label on the silk-lined box, our set was retailed sometime between 1929 and 1940, after  the merger. . Operating along with Lenox and Dansk under the Lenox Corporation, Gorham still produces sterling silver although the Gorham Manufacturing complex in Providence was demolished in 1997. Condition: Silver excellent. Box, expected wear.  Dimensions: spoons, 5”, fork, 5” pusher. 4.25”. Box 6.5" x 8" x 1.25.
