Though born on the Mediterranean Island of Malta, popular Mid-Century watercolor painter John Chetcuti (1900-1976) lived and worked primarily in the Rockport along the North Shore of Massachusetts bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Consequently, he was drawn to paint genre scenes of harbors, young athletes, and traditional salt box homes, all perfectly suited to his impressionistic if somewhat formulaic style. Chetcuti was known, however, to winter occasionally in the Caribbean, visiting islands that must have reminded him of his Maltese roots and at which our two watercolors were painted. His warm and sympathetic portraits of an Islander mother and child and a fisherman rise to another artistic and emotional level, seemingly much closer to his inherent sun-washed spirit. Chetcuti is in many private collections across America, and he was a member of the American Watercolor Society, Audubon Artists, the North Shore Arts Association, and the Rockport Art Association – one of the most active such groups in the Country.
