Francis E. Getty (1860-1944) spent most of his life and professional career as an artist and illustrator working between his homes in Jamaica Plains, MA, and Conway, NH, with frequent visits to Bermuda. These locations inspired his work, and he is best known for his widely reproduced pencil sketches of revolutionary period New England buildings and his pink and cerulean blue seascapes of Bermuda. But as this impressive gouache attests, he was in touch with many of the trends of his day. The plein air feel, subtle palette, quick brush strokes and harmonizing atmosphere have much in common with the regional impressionist styles developing in areas across the United States. This might be California in style and topography, but there is no record of his visiting the West. A best guess of location is the Saco River, NH where he often painted, hiked and fished with fellow artists, such as William Paskell and James Hunting. Signed in pencil lower right. Condition: Excellent. Dimensions: Frame 19"x 24". Image 15"x19".
