The feminine ideal pictured in this remarkable late 19th-century oil miniature is miles apart from most contemporary portraits of women. Here, the young sitter is all self-possession, determination and, though the term was not used then, empowerment. Her straightforward demeanor and crisp summer costume remind one of graduation portraits, a favorite of proud parents.  While we know nothing of her background or circumstances, we have some clues.  Her fashionable pearl collar is of a style popularized by both Queen Mary (1876-1953) and Queen Alexandra (1844-1925).  In addition, the beautiful plush claret velvet and gold bordering of the framing and the high quality of the painting itself testify to the love and means of the sitter’s family. Her pride in them radiates from her clear-eyed glance, set jaw and hint of a smile. Condition: Excellent. Dimensions: Frame, 6.5” x 7.75.” Image, 2.5” x 3.”
