Belgian/French poet Pierre Félix Louis (1870 – 1925) was a close friend of Nobel Prize winner André Gide as well as dramatist Oscar Wilde, who dedicated the original French edition of Salomé to him. Louÿs (he changed the spelling of his name in 1890) was known particularly as an author of erotic poetry, exploring lesbian and classical Greek themes in a distinctive, precise style which eventually led to his being named a Chevalier and an Officer of the Légion d’Honneur for his contributions to French literature. Louÿs partnered with many of the finest illustrators of his day including Fujita and Louis Icart; Debussy set three of his poems into a song cycle entitled Les Chansons de Bilitis. Our finely bound French edition of his Poèmes was published by Editions Albin Michel of Paris in 1949 and illustrated by Berthommé Saint-André. This edition was originally issued in a soft cover but was professionally rebound possibly as a presentation copy. Condition: Fine, tight copy, custom binding. Dimensions: 9.25 x 7.5" x 1".
