Our rare signed First Edition of Bidgood by Bruce Benderson was published in 1999 by Taschen Books, the German fine art publishing house. The book, with its pink boards, silver page edges and glossy Bidgood photographs throughout, is a lavish homage to the artist who is credited with creating the glamour aesthetic in gay photography. Bidgood (1933-2022) arrived in New York City from Stoughton, WI, in 1951 and gradually found success as a film producer, drag artist, window dresser, costume designer, and freelance photographer. Above all, Bidgood was a romanticist and fantasist who created his own bedazzling universe in his small apartment on 14th Street in Manhattan. It was there, between 1963-1970, he filmed (perhaps accumulated is a more accurate term) Pink Narcissus, his stream of consciousness dialogue with a young gay man. It was also there, using props, excess fabric and other supplies picked up at his paid jobs, where he built extraordinarily magical environments peopled with idealized visions of male gay beauty. These photographs of his entirely convincing staged fantasies are joyful and erotic; they are undoubtedly the greatest part of his artistic legacy. Condition: Book, very good, minor chipping and ceases. Jacket, very good wear to edges and corners; few small chips and tears. Dimensions: 8" x 15.5" x 1".
