These hand-woven straw baskets are from a private collection of fine vintage and contemporary art works assembled by a connoisseur of African art. The remarkable design and execution of our examples are all the more extraordinary in that the largest of the group is a mere 3 inches tall, including the handle. The baskets are probably from Ghana, which has been a center of sophisticated culture since at least the 9th century. Ghana has also been a hub of international European trade since the 18th century when the Portuguese first established relations with the wealthy Ashanti Kingdom bordering on the Gulf of Guinea, West Africa. Despite the area’s long and rich artistic output, there is little to prepare one for the finesse and scale of these remarkable baskets. Condition: Excellent. Dimensions: Range from 1.75" x 1.25" to 3" x 2".
