Mary Anning (1799—1847), said by some folklorists to be the inspiration for “She Sells Seashells Down by the Seashore,” was an English paleontologist, fossil collector and dealer world famous among scientists. After her discovery of Jurassic marine fossils at Lyme Regis in Dorset on the southwestern coast of England, she gained wide popularity outside the science community. Though barred because of her gender from membership in the prestigious Geological Society of London, Anning contributed extensively to the understanding of prehistoric marine life anatomy and the fossil record. Moreover, she earned a meager living from selling specimens to professionals and amateurs alike, and thus was instrumental to spreading the hobby of fossil collecting which continues to be a popular pastime. Our small fossil collection, assembled in the 1960s, includes: a polished Orthoceras, Trilobites, an Ammonite and what appears to be a specimen of polished fossilized tree bark. Condition: Excellent. Dimensions:  Please see first photograph.
