It has been suggested that this unusual silk hanging of petal-shaped elements embroidered in gold thread, is part of a Chinese opera costume and probably dates from the 1920s. The piece, which would have been worn as a belt, is stylistically related to the costumes used in Cantonese opera. Cantonese opera, one of the categories of this century's old traditional art form, originated in the southern province of Guangdong. It is perhaps less well-known in the west than the northern Chinese Peking opera. Cantonese operas fall into two categories: Mou, or martial arts plays featuring generals or other warriors, and the gentler Man, featuring characters who are often scholars versed in poetry and culture. The costumes reflect these underlying themes and also convey the status, gender and character of stock roles. This belt would have been appropriate for a Man play. Costumes, including accessories, were so important to the success of the production, that wardrobe masters and the actors themselves lavished money on the exquisite workmanship. Judging by the lack of wear to our example, this textile was rarely, if ever, used on stage. Condition: Excellent. Dimensions: 4' x 4" at widest.
