Our double-framed miniature watercolor portrait, full of Regency-Period dash, is notable not only for the artist’s skill and the sitter’s elegance, but also because it opens a window into the close-knit community of English portraitists and landscape painters flourishing during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The picture is a likeness of Paul Sanby (sic) Jr. painted by miniaturist Lady Anne Phyllis Beechey, née Jessop (1764 –1833), sometime after 1799 when she assumed her title. Lady Anne’s even more renowned artist-husband, Sir William Beechey (1753-1839), was the official court painter to King George III’s Queen Charlotte and maintained close ties with the Royal family through the reign of King George IV. As it occurred, one of Sir William’s most famous non-royal sitters was artist William Sandby, father of Lady Anne’s sitter in our miniature, who is credited with being the father of the English school of landscape painting. The miniature was custom re-framed in 1877. The history of the picture written on painted oilcloth has been retained on the reverse. Condition: Miniature: very good with minor paint loss to the costume. Framing: Craquleur to the black 19th century support. Dimensions: Miniature: 3" x 2". Frame: 5.25" x 6".
