Irish fashion designer Sybil Connolly (1921 – 1998) created this magnifying glass for Tiffany & Company in the 1980s. The floral design of the handle was based on the botanical decoupages and drawings of Mary Delany (1700-1788) who’s largely forgotten work Connolly championed. Connolly, called a “national treasure” by former Irish prime minister Jack Lynch, was famous for her creative use of traditional fabrics such as Irish handkerchief linen and Carrickmacross lace. At one time her atelier employed over 200 women, working from home, weaving custom tweeds and lace. Their industry was needed to satisfy the high demand for Connolly’s fashions from such socially prominent names as Mellon, DuPont, and Rockefeller. Jacqueline Kennedy chose to wear a Sybil Connolly creation made of yards of uncrushable pleated handkerchief linen in her official White House portrait by Aaron Shikler. Our magnifier is signed, "Sybil Connolly for Tiffany & Co." Condition: Excellent. Dimensions: 6", glass diameter 2,15"
