Our antique, deep-blue costume jewelry brooch circa 1900 is an example of the use of art glass as a highly expressive medium in jewelry design. Imitating lapis lazuli with special attention paid to the details of the setting, this example was probably manufactured in Bavaria or Austria. The Arts and Crafts Movement of the period sought to bring beauty into the life of ordinary people through affordable, everyday objects such as our brooch. It sought inspiration in an idealized past that romanticized the individual artisan, an idyll that was to all but disappear in the harsh reality of World War I.
