In 1869 a French woman, Augustina Gripoix, perfected the method of pouring liquid glass directly into ceramic molds in a manner which preserved the intensity of color, a technique immediately popular with makers and buyers of copies of fine jewelry. The House of Gripoix became a force in the recognition of costume jewelry as an independent art form, making pieces for celebrities such as Sarah Bernhard and couture designers such as Charles Frederick Worth and Paul Poiret. Perhaps the company’s most famous fashion partnership was with Coco Channel. Our jade-like poured glass oval pendant in a sterling frame is unmarked, but it is most likely continental from the first half of the 19th century.  The saturated color and the highly detailed bas-relief of a fruit bouquet epitomizes the delicacy that could be achieved by the methods introduced by Madame Gripoix.  Condition: Excellent Dimensions: Pendant, 1.5" x .75". Necklace, 12".
