This small jewel toned oil painting of a derelict building undoubtedly located in 20th century Baltimore is typical of the work of Melvin O. Miller (1937-2007). A graduate of the Maryland Institute of Art, Miller was particularly drawn to the polished handling and rich palette of early Flemish realist masters such as Van Eyck. He applied them, to somewhat ghostly effect, to the Inner Harbor and surrounding working-class neighborhoods of his native city. The formula did not always work. But in our evocative “portrait” of a ruined row house of a kind that once so typified Baltimore’s urban landscape, Miller’s enamel-like technique of oil on canvas gives us a poignant and deeply dignified study of city and its people at twilight. Condition: One small scratch paint loss, left center. Dimensions: Image, 7.5" x 9.5". Frame, 11.25" x 13.25".
