A new era began in Hollywood glamour as the rigid sexual norms of the 1950s gave way to the sexual revolution of the 1960s. The bombshell, the wise-cracker and the good girl gave way to the sex kitten as the new box office attraction. Ann-Margaret was one of the most successful. Looking back, she and her sisters in studio packaging such as Angie Dickinson, Jane Fonda, Claudia Cardinale and Raquel Welsh, made the look slightly interchangeable with their puffed hair, athletic innocence, and healthy sexuality. They were in fact neither interchangeable nor satisfied with staying in place, but remarkable and durable individual talents who would go on to become stars in movies, television, live theater, and recording. Ann-Margaret enjoyed first major success in 1963 with her role as Kim McAfee in Bye, Bye Birdie. Since then she has been nominated for 27 of the major media awards, has won 17 and continues to perform challenging dramatic and comedic roles to admiring reviews. This color negative, apparently never used, dates from the early days of her Hollywood career. It was found in 1989 among a mixed box of discarded negatives. The negative was probably taken with a 500 C Hasselblad medium format camera, the camera of choice at the time for its depth and clarity of output. Condition: Excellent. The slight distortion seen is due to a plastic sleeve. Dimensions: 2.5"x 2.5".
