Judging by its green and white drip glaze and stylized, slightly abstracted form, this ceramic sculpture of a dog staring up at a pair of birds on a low tree branch was probably made prior to the 1940s. The unknown maker of our miniature was both a keen observer of nature and a sensitive artist. His work is a small character study of his subjects and a deftly captured moment of contemplation in nature. In addition to simply giving pleasure, miniatures are particularly suited to focusing our attention on the metes and bounds of the larger world around us. Many cultures have recognized their value; for centuries, Chinese scholars have positioned miniatures of natural and created form on their desks to inspire ideas and help them concentrate.
