Fredrick Pape (1870-1938) drew this pastel at the height of his powers as an artist. He captures a young but worldly geisha in a rich kimono looking somewhat skeptically at the viewer. Pape was born in San Francisco and studied at Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Academie Julian before returning to New York in 1894. After winning several important competitions as a young man, he embarked on a brilliant career – as a painter, sculptor, illustrator and teacher – which continued until his death in 1938. N.C. Wyeth was among his many successful students. The picture is signed and dated 1927 in the lower left. Condition: Excellent. Dimensions: Frame 14"x19" Image 8"x13.5".
