This haunting, robotic image on an unused postcard (ca 1920s) owes much to the German expressionism seen in Fritz Lang’s 1927 film, Metropolis, as well as the work of Viennese fashion photographer Madame D’Ora and Man Ray. The postcard has an embossed-stamp maker's mark on the lower right, “Atelier Stella, Wien XVI, Neue Frohenfelder Strasse.” The 16th District was a politically active and culturally restive working class residential area of Vienna housing many small printing concerns. New Frohenfelder Street apparently no longer exists. Condition: A small ink mark mid-upper right intrudes on the image background, otherwise excellent. Dimensions: 3.25" x 5.25".
