It is customary to describe objects such as our 19th-century English leather travel mirror as “campaign” material, although there is no way to prove that it ever saw battle action. The far-flung British Empire required vast numbers of military and administrative personnel to be planted in cities and outposts around the world to protect trade and strategic political alliances. Mobility was key to the guns and status diplomacy of “Empire” and gave rise to an adaptive style of compact, cleverly engineered mechanical furniture such as the cabinetta, a combination fold-out bed and desk. These portable signal flags of Victorian aristocratic values, made by such firms as Howard & Sons and Ross & Co., ensured that no matter the terrain, climate or hostile populations, the Queen’s representatives maintained a civilized level of creature comfort. Accessories, such as our mirror, were part of the picture. Sturdy and uncompromising, probably made of cordovan leather, the raised frame secured the glass from damage. The pattern of hand oil on the reverse shows its utility. Condition: Repair to easel back, otherwise excellent. Dimensions:  5" x 6".
