This dramatic confetti-colored, acrylic plastic pin has the shape of a butterfly impressed into the wider end which, though difficult to photograph, adds subtly to the elegance and wit of the piece. It was most likely manufactured in ca. 1950s France or Japan. It may be made of Lucite, discovered by the DuPont Company in the 1930s or any number of chemically related acrylic plastics. Such costume jewelry has come to be grouped generically under the name ”lucite” (lower case l) and are distinct from the “Bakelite” family of plastic materials. The manufacturer of the unmarked pin used sophisticated techniques to achieve the difficult multi-colored effect; most acrylic jewelry went no further than the suspension of silver or gold flecks in a translucent body. The feather shape, liveliness and generous size of our pin would have made it appropriate for use on a smart felt hat or coat lapel. Condition: Excellent. Size: 4" x 1.75" at top.
