After retiring from professional boxing in 1927, Jack Dempsey (1895 – 1983) invested his considerable earnings and fame in numerous business and real estate projects including his popular Times Square restaurant from which our signed menu comes. Dempsey, an aggressive, powerful hitter in the ring and larger-than-life character out of it, reigned as the world heavy weight champion from 1919-1926. His killer punch made him a rich man and his pioneering promotion of the live broadcast of sporting events changed professional sports forever. Dempsey opened his restaurant in New York City’s Theater District in 1935, first at 8th Avenue & 50th St., then at 49th St. and Broadway. It closed for good in 1974. It is important to note that Dempsey’s signature was printed on the back of all the menus, but he was known to show up at the restaurant occasionally to greet customers personally and to autograph individual copies. Our menu, with its ink signature at the bottom left of the cover is such an example. Condition: Surface toning and small stains, other minor wear.
