Too large for traditional 19th century doll houses, this handmade miniature cast iron bakery cabinet was once probably part of a “Nuremberg,” or “German,” kitchen.” These popular reduced-scale single rooms usually replicated a kitchen or a shop, and came fully equipped with appliances, storage pieces, pots, pans, and dishes, food stuffs and highly embellished decorative trimmings. Sometimes called “room boxes,” they were traditionally brought out and decorated at Christmas time; they served as miniature stage sets of domestic warmth and home economics. Many were made in home workshops until companies such as Gebruda Bing and Marklin started to mass produce them. Nuremberg was the center of 19th century German toy production lending its name to many products of the time. But since our example is marked Cabinette, it may have originally been part of a model of a French patisserie. Condition: Overall good and complete with dings, paint losses and other surface wear from use. Dimensions: 7" x 4" x 2.5".
