Like the pearl and amber, coral is considered an organic gemstone because it is the product of a biological, rather than geological, process. Coral is the calcium carbonate super structure that colonies of minute coral polyps construct as a protective habitat in tropical seas and oceans. Over eons, these group homes mass into coral reefs. Coral has been valued since antiquity due to its beautiful colors, ease of handling and ability to take a polish. Angel skin coral, pink to pinky-white in color, is one of the most admired. The material of the antique beads comprising this necklace was probably taken from the particularly prized variety found in southern Japanese coastal waters. Today, most pink coral comes from the Mediterranean Sea. These beads are almost pure cream colored with flecks of pink indicating that they were carved from near the core of the coral branch which is usually paler than the outer layers. The beads graduate in size from 2.5-3mms to the larger central beads measuring 7.5-9mms. The clasp is stamped “Czechoslovakia” and features a pink glass bead imitating a conch pearl. Czechoslovakia became an independent nation in 1918 and, based on the style of the ensemble, one can reasonably date the necklace to soon after that, perhaps the early 1920s. Beads of this quality and tone make a flattering neckline and are highly esteemed. Condition: Excellent. Hand re-knotted in pink silk. Length: 14" drop.
