This signed and dedicated first edition of Stud, written under the pen name Phil Andros, is a personal manifest of homosexual experience by one of the key authors of modern gay literature. Samuel Steward (1909-1993), writing as Andros, was a man of many interests: author, hustler, college English professor, contributor to the World Book Encyclopedia, sometime alcoholic and legendary tattoo artist. He seemed to embody the verse from the Upanishads that the “sharp edge of the razor is difficult to pass over.” He passed restlessly through and under life in search of expression and the right company. In 1932, Stewart’s academic advisor introduced him to Gertrude Stein. They developed a life-long friendship and at Stein’s home he met Thomas Mann, Thornton Wilder, Lord Alfred Douglas and Andre Gide. In 1949, he met Alfred Kinsey and became an unofficial participant at his Institute for Sexual Research. At Kinsey’s request Steward provided detailed records of his daily sexual activities chronicled in a card catalogue he referred to as his "Stud File." By the 1960s Steward began writing and publishing his erotica abroad under the name of Phil Andros. In 1966, due to changes in American laws, Guild Press was able to publish STUD in the United States. As both author and protagonist, Steward recounts his sexual adventures in the tradition of the picaresque novel that originated in 16th century Spain. Guild Press LTD. Condition: A fine, bright copy.
