This 1950s “Turbo-Orlon” lady’s sweater was manufactured by “Spuncraft,” a popular mid-priced American brand known particularly for its short-wasted, embellished cardigans. Our example, with its black sequins, imitation pearls and glass beads has particularly intricate decoration reminiscent of a toreador’s costume and may have been paired with the cropped pants of that name so popular at the time. “Turbo-Orlon” was specially spun yarn of the artificial fiber invented by DuPont. Its softness and comfortable drape were meant to imitate cashmere and its durability promised a lifetime of use and resistance to bugs. The fabric fell out of favor with the counterculture fashions of the 1960s and was never reintroduced to a mass market, even as part of the over abundant crop of man-made fabrics produced in the 1970s. However, judging by the condition of our sweater, Turbo-Orlon seems to have delivered on its original promise. Condition: Excellent. Size: S
