Edward Gorey (1925-2000) described himself as a writer of nonsense literature, and he does indeed critique the world very much in the tradition of Lewis Carrol and Edward Lear. Elusive, sharp, and elegant, his illustrations are punctuation marks in the ghastly syntax of his imagination and our nightmares. And, despite their constant appearance in his work, children are not his audience. They more often are his conjurer’s bait, sometimes writing under anagrammatic pen names such as Ogdred Weary, Dogear Wryde, and Ms. Regera Dowdy. The Awdrey-Gore Legacy is an homage and is dedicated to Agatha Christie; the book is filled with clues to a fictional mystery author’s murder which can never be solved and which never, in any case, rises to being the point. Yet, being baffled we are amused. Being lost, we are sad to come to an end. First Edition. Condition: Book, very good, Dust Jacket, Fair condition, intact with bumping and rubbing.
